Stabilising critical infrastructure for Auckland Transport
A low-carbon concrete lattice stabilises critical infrastructure and keeps a vital Auckland shared path open
Ageing infrastructure sitting on unstable ground is a growing challenge for transport networks across New Zealand, and the Oakley Creek Esplanade Reserve was no exception. An active landslip was undermining a shared path and critical infrastructure near Great North Road, Auckland. Left unaddressed, failure of this section of road would have caused major traffic congestion across the wider network.
Working with Holcim New Zealand, Auckland Transport needed a solution that could stabilise the site without compromising on performance or carbon targets. The answer was an in-ground concrete lattice structure, built using the diaphragm-wall technique, engineered to meet demanding requirements for early age strength, concrete bleed under pressure, workability and spread retention, alongside embodied carbon reduction.
Holcim New Zealand supplied around 500m³ of concrete utilising 70% replacement of cement with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), and around 2,500m³ utilising 50% GGBFS replacement. Laboratory and production trials were carried out across several low-carbon mixes to land on a solution that met every project target.

The result: a resilient, low-carbon solution for a site that keeps a critical piece of Auckland's transport network open. Specialist contractor on the project March Construction was awarded the Excellence in Product Innovation award by Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ), with Holcim recognised for its contribution in supplying an innovative and highly technical low-carbon concrete mix.
