Aggregates

Our aggregates are used as raw materials for concrete, masonry and asphalt and as base materials for roads and buildings. As such, they are a key component of construction.

Mercer Sand Quarry Products

Concrete Sand

Mercer Sand is able to produce natural sand products to a range of grades in order to match the specific requirements of our customers.

General Quarry Products

Holcim can provide general quarry aggregates including non-specified drainage and landscaping aggregates including:

  • Pumice sand which is ideal for mixing with soils or garden mixes to help with drainage
  • Paving sand, a clean washed fine river sand suitable for paving finished levels prior to paver placement and for children's sand pits

Our Environment

Mercer Sand operates on farmland that was previously part of the Waikato River. Present day operations see the quarry operate a dredge that extracts and pumps sand and water to a processing plant where it is screened, washed and then processed with spiral separators before being dewatered and stockpiled.

All topsoil removed from the site as part of the quarry process is stockpiled, hydro seeded and then used within the site rehabilitation plan which will see the site at the end of quarrying turned into a recreational lake for use by the Mercer Community and local Mercer rowing club.

Our Local Community

Mercer has a long-standing history with local iwi, Ngati Naho who call Mercer, Te Paina.

As part of Holcim’s operations at Mercer Sand it has taken over the He Kawenata Tapu (Sacred Covenant) between Mercer Sand and the Ngati Naho Trust who Holcim will work with both on site at the quarry and within the greater Mercer community.
