A range of low-carbon cement and cementitious binders for Aotearoa’s homes, buildings and infrastructure

What is ECOPlanet?

ECOPlanet is Holcim New Zealand’s low-carbon cement providing at least a 30% reduction in carbon intensity, when compared to standard GP cement without compromising performance.[1]

ECOPlanet is backed by a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) meaning you can specify each project with confidence.

ECOPlanet is a blend of general purpose (GP) cement and supplementary cementitious materials, including Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), fly ash, and may be combined with admixture technology at our speciality facility in Auckland. The ECOPlanet blend is available from Onehunga and Wellington, and will be available from Lyttleton in July.

Case Study

Cradle to gate carbon emissions comparing a 60:40 blend from our Auckland facility (60% GP, 40% GGBFS) with default general purpose cement. This is showing that for every tonne of cement when replaced by ECOPlanet  there is a reduction in carbon emissions by 380kg of CO2-e.

This equates to a 39.5% reduction in carbon intensity when compared to the Global Cement and Concrete Association's default CO2-e.[2]

What does a 39.5% reduction in CO2-e for each tonne of cement look like?

Our low-carbon range

In addition to ECOPlanet - ENVIROCore is a range of cement replacements available for concrete manufacturers, and other manufacturers using cement, to deliver high performance concrete with a lower embodied carbon impact.

ENVIROCore provides manufacturers the opportunity to lower the carbon of concrete by replacing GP cement with these alternatives. All products within the ENVIROCore range meet the New Zealand Standards.

ENVIROCore 100

Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) to provide heightened durability in high wear and harsh areas including marine and highly acidic or alkaline environments. Also suitable for general purpose concrete applications.

ENVIROCore 200

Fly ash products sourced from international suppliers to provide improved workability, lower heat of hydration in large mass pours. Also suitable for general purpose concrete applications.

FAQs

What are carbon emissions?

Carbon emissions is a term used for emissions of greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. Carbon emissions are measured in the unit kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalence (kgCO2-e).

How can ECOPlanet help me reduce my carbon emissions?

ECOPlanet is a low-carbon range of cement offering at least 30% reduction when compared to traditional ready-mix concrete solutions.

Why is it important to transition to more sustainable cement?

From the additions we build, the homes we create and DIY projects we undertake, we all can all play a part in building a low-carbon future. At Holcim New Zealand, we are committed to investing in research and technology that helps us reduce our impact on the environment.

What are carbon offsets and how do they work?

Carbon offsets are used to compensate for carbon emitted from, for example producing a product, by purchasing third party verified carbon credits from carbon reductions elsewhere.
