Holcim Concrete Powers New Avalon Skate Park

From Kiwi Point to kickflips—Holcim helps create a vibrant new skate destination

At Holcim New Zealand, we’re proud to support infrastructure that brings communities together. One of our recent contributions is the striking new Avalon Skate Park in Lower Hutt, Wellington—a purpose-built space now buzzing with skaters, scooter riders, and BMX riders of all ages.

Locally Sourced Mixes with Lasting Impact

Holcim supplied ready-mix concrete for the project, delivered from our Kiwi Point Plant in Wellington. Our supply included:

  • 30MPa standard concrete
  • 30MPa shotcrete
  • Monte Carlo from our Coloured Concrete Range

The use of Monte Carlo coloured concrete added visual appeal and durability, helping create a modern, high-performance surface for everyday use.

The skatepark's design was a collaborative effort involving a Skatepark Advisory Group composed of local skate industry experts and enthusiasts.

Internationally renowned skatepark designers Convic led the design process, ensuring the facility met both community needs and global standards.

Opened in December 2024, the new skate park replaces the former Melling Skate Park, which will be removed to make way for the Melling Interchange. The project was funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as part of the Melling Transport Improvements, within the broader Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi program.

Construction was led by internationally renowned skate park designers Convic, whose multi-award winning portfolio of safe, social youth spaces has enriched communities across the planet including in Australia, Dubai, China, and New Zealand.

We’re proud to have helped lay the foundation for a facility that promotes active lifestyles and stronger community connections. It’s just one more way Holcim is building better together.

The New Avalon Skate Park, officially named Motutawa Skatepark, is a state-of-the-art facility located within Avalon Park in Lower Hutt, Wellington.
