Aggregates

Our aggregates are used as raw materials for concrete, masonry and asphalt and as base materials for roads and buildings. As such, they are a key component of construction.

Hastings Quarry

The Hastings Quarry has a long history of servicing and supplying the Hawkes Bay Market with quality aggregate products. The quarry has been operating at its current site since the late 70s and early 80s. Our onsite IANZ 17025 Certified Laboratory ensures that our products meet relevant standards and/or customer specifications.

Hastings Quarry Products

Roading Aggregates
Sealing Chip (including Napier Specification)

The Hastings Quarry specialises in providing sealing chip that consistently meet the specifications required of this product. With the benefit of our Barmac crushers we are able to supply sealing aggregates with exactly the right angular shape to maximise skid resistance and stay locked into the binder material.

Manufactured Sand

Natural sand is becoming an increasingly depleted resource. Holcim has a sustainable solution in the form of manufactured sands. The result is a high quality fine aggregate that is an ideal solution for all concrete  and asphalt applications.

Asphalt Aggregates

The Hastings Quarry is able to produce asphalt aggregates with the consistent particle size and angular shape to ensure the end product knits together tightly, fills all the voids and creates a smooth, even surface.

Concrete Aggregates

By removing much of the variability that accompanies natural products, we enable our customers to optimise their mix designs to get the best from the materials and, consequently, cost-effective concrete.

General Quarry Products

Holcim can provide a wide range of general quarry aggregates  for the market in order to match the specific requirements of our customers.  Products include non specified basecourse and drainage aggregates.

Our Environment

The Hastings Quarry extracts rock from the bed and banks of the Ngaruroro River. Due to the sensitive nature of this location and the presence of rare nesting birds (the Banded Dotterel) Holcim ensures that river operations are conducted in a manner that ensures the river and its surrounding environment is not impacted in any manner. Surveys are taken during the nesting season of the Banded Dotterel to ensure that all operations are carried out without disturbance to nesting birds.

Our Local Community

As a responsible quarry operator, we value the amenity of our neighbours and the surrounding community. Open days and personalised site visits are periodically held to show how a working quarry operates and allows any feedback from the community on our operations. We welcome any feedback at any time.

Mercer Sand Quarry

The Mercer Sand Quarry offers the Auckland and Waikato markets a valuable high grade sand resource along with a range of other quarry products. The quarry produces tailored sand grades to meet customer needs, including concrete sand and essential general quarry products.

Mercer Sand Quarry Products

Concrete Sand

Mercer Sand is able to produce natural sand products to a range of grades in order to match the specific requirements of our customers.

General Quarry Products

Holcim can provide general quarry aggregates including non-specified drainage and landscaping aggregates including:

  • Pumice sand which is ideal for mixing with soils or garden mixes to help with drainage
  • Paving sand, a clean washed fine river sand suitable for paving finished levels prior to paver placement and for children's sand pits
Our Environment

Mercer Sand operates on farmland that was previously part of the Waikato River. Present day operations see the quarry operate a dredge that extracts and pumps sand and water to a processing plant where it is screened, washed and then processed with spiral separators before being dewatered and stockpiled.

All topsoil removed from the site as part of the quarry process is stockpiled, hydro seeded and then used within the site rehabilitation plan which will see the site at the end of quarrying turned into a recreational lake for use by the Mercer Community and local Mercer rowing club.

Our Local Community

Mercer has a long-standing history with local iwi, Ngati Naho who call Mercer, Te Paina.

As part of Holcim’s operations at Mercer Sand it has taken over the He Kawenata Tapu (Sacred Covenant) between Mercer Sand and the Ngati Naho Trust who Holcim will work with both on site at the quarry and within the greater Mercer community.
