Further step towards Holcim plant decision

24 June 2011

The proposal for a new Holcim cement plant at Weston, near Oamaru, has progressed one step nearer to a decision.

At its May meeting the Executive Committee of parent company Holcim Ltd received a presentation providing further information about the proposed Weston plant, as requested after they first viewed the proposal earlier this year.

The Executive Committee has now recommended that the Weston proposal proceed to the Holcim Ltd Board for a decision.

"Obviously we’re delighted that we’ve progressed a step further, " said Holcim New Zealand Capital Projects Manager, Ken Cowie.   "A key step remains however; gaining approval from the Holcim Ltd Board. "

In a newsletter distributed recently to approximately 8000 Oamaru residents and other interested parties, Holcim said it is hopeful that its proposal will go before the Holcim Ltd Board this year.

The newsletter also details initiatives put in place by the company to help staff and community in the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes, and reveals its launch of a lower carbon cement to achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions from cement production.
