Community Support Programme

Community Support Programme

We are committed to being a good neighbour in the communities in which the company operates. To achieve this we assess local needs, promote community involvement and partner with local stakeholders to improve educational, social and cultural development in those communities.

We provide assistance through our Community Support Programme, with preference given to three focus areas:

  • Education that increases future options
  • Initiatives that support strong communities (ie. helping communities to help themselves)
  • Community infrastructure

Each year we work with our communities to identify priority needs in these three areas.

The assistance we provide comes in several forms:

Sponsorships (this may involve providing funds, product, time or expertise)

Examples of the Community Support we provide:

EERST (Paper4Trees)

For nearly 10 years Holcim has supported schools in various regions throughout New Zealand through the Paper4Trees Carbon Reduction programme. Schools are supplied with a native tree or plant for every two cubic metres of paper and cardboard they recycle or keep from landfill. The EERST group provide all the resources required for recycling including recycling bins for every classroom in participating schools.
Holcim staff have been involved in helping with delivery and planting with the students.

Flaxmere Community Support

The Holcim Hastings Quarry are associated with several local initiatives in the community. Some of these include health and exercise programmes, community gardens, academies for helping youth develop life skills and confidence, assistance for the elderly, and sports and cultural programmes.

Kawatiri River Trail

Holcim was a significant sponsor for the Kawatiri River Trail in Westport. This is a walking and biking track providing direct access via boardwalks and bridges along the river’s edge to the beach so that visitors and locals alike can enjoy the stunning views on offer.

Holcim Scholarships

Holcim has awarded tertiary study scholarships for around 30 years. Scholarships are offered in various locations close to our larger sites. The scholarship pays $2,000 per year for up to three years of study, as well as providing holiday work when available at our operating sites.

Teaching & Research Position

Holcim New Zealand has, since 2003, sponsored a part-time teaching and research position at the University of Canterbury School of Engineering. Professor Des Bull, who holds the position, is working with the building industry on concrete construction technologies.
